Julia’s story

Born two months premature, little Julia Carvalho spent her first two weeks in the NICU of Tufts Medical Center. The Carvalho family soon became familiar with the two-hour drive from Cape Cod — first to be by Julia’s side as she received vital care by the hospital team, then for follow-up visits that continue today. 

“We just wanted her to be healthy and home,” says Danieli, Julia’s mother. “Our eldest was so excited to play with her new baby sister. She was too young to understand why Julia kept having to leave.” 

While the drives were long and stressful, support from Irving Oil’s community program Fuel the Care helped ease the burden, as the Carvalho family was able to use fuel gift cards to help cover the cost of travel. 

“Having that support made a real difference,” Danieli says. “It took one stress away from our many long travel days.”
