Irving Oil donates property to the City of Charlottetown; municipality plans to develop community hub
Charlottetown, PEI – Irving Oil is pleased to announce the company has donated a significant piece of real estate located in downtown Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to the City of Charlottetown. This land will allow the city to lead future development initiatives in the heart of the capital city. Future plans by the City of Charlottetown include a community hub and collaborative space for government, private sector and community to innovate.
The property, located at 85 Euston Street on the northwest corner of Euston and Queen streets, boasts a rich history including its iconic “turret” design by Acadian architect Samuel Roy, who developed other Irving retail sites of similar design around the Maritimes. Constructed in the 1930s, the Euston Street site was part of Irving Oil's early expansion as a regional company based in New Brunswick, and it served as a popular filling and service station for over 70 years to residents of and visitors to the island.
“We are proud to support the City of Charlottetown and its residents through this important land donation – providing a foundation for the city’s vision for future development in its downtown core,” says Darren Gillis, Irving Oil’s Chief Marketing Officer.
“This generous donation from Irving Oil marks an exciting new chapter for Charlottetown’s downtown,” says Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown. “The City is grateful for the opportunity to honour the site’s rich history while paving the way for innovation and public connection in our downtown.”
Irving Oil has deep roots in Charlottetown and across Prince Edward Island, and it is proud to call the island home to its business operations. This land donation by the company will allow for the municipality to transform the downtown landmark into a location to be enjoyed by residents and visitors, and is a contribution to the continued growth and vibrancy of this Maritime capital city.
