Stevie’s story

A little lift when they need it most

Stevie’s story

“I just want her to be the happiest she can be.”

At five years old, Stevie Butts, of Cape Breton, Canada, was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumor. After undergoing intensive treatments that included an eight-hour brain surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and many hospital stays, she has seen significant progress in her healing journey.

“The drives have been long,” says Kelsey, Stevie’s mother, who was frequently making nearly a five-hour commute across Nova Scotia to IWK Health in Halifax. “Fuel the Care has helped take that part of stress off our plate — it's one less worry during an overwhelming time.”

Since 2002, Irving Oil’s community program Fuel the Care has provided fuel gift cards to more than 120,000 families like Stevie's across Atlantic Canada, New England and Ireland who travel for their children’s medical care.

Even with complications leading to hearing loss, recurring infections and mobility challenges, Stevie continues to gain strength. She now uses a walker and enjoys letting her creativity shine, gifting special bracelets to many who visit her.

This past summer brought brighter days — time with cousins, friends and a community that’s helped lift spirits.

“While we sometimes count on others for the extra cheer, she can easily make anyone’s day just with her precious smile,” her mother says.

By fueling up at Irving Oil, you support Fuel the Care — giving families a lift when they need it most. Thank you for making a difference.
